Non-Academic Public Lecture on Public Speaking: Speak to Be Heard, Not Just to Be Listened To

On Thursday, July 3, 2025, Politeknik Statistika STIS held a non-academic public lecture on public speaking at the Politeknik Statistika STIS campus auditorium. This lecture featured Mrs. Medha Wardhany, S.ST, M.Si., CPS, CDS, CPM, a BNSP-certified public speaker and statistician at BPS Central Java Province, as the speaker. The event was mandatory for all students of the Applied Bachelor of Statistics Program Class of 63 and the Diploma III Statistics Program Class of 64.
Mrs. Medha emphasized the importance of applying the 3V—Verbal, Vocal, and Visual—in communication to ensure that messages are delivered effectively. By combining three key objectives—to inform, to persuade, and to entertain—the goals of public speaking can be achieved. In addition, she explained the essential structure and techniques of public speaking, such as opening, body, and closing, during the session.
Practice sessions, simple real-life examples, and games were also conducted to apply the material so that students could better understand the speaker’s points. The speaker emphasized that public speaking is not an inherited talent, but a skill that must be continuously sharpened. The lecture concluded with a discussion session and a joint prayer.
